Meeting Room AJoin us for "Rethinking Adoption: In Our Own Words" and "Big Happiness" two documentaries that center adoptee voices about international adoption for National Adoptee Awareness Month.
"Rethinking Adoption: In Our Own Words" is an introductory video for anyone wanting to learn about intercountry adoption from lived experience. It was created by Lynelle Long & Intercountry Adoptee Voices.
In 1988 Dahee Kim was adopted from South Korea as a baby, and was raised by a white family in the suburbs of Minnesota. "Big Happiness" centers around two dinner conversations, one with her adoptive parents in Minnesota, and the other with another Korean adoptee in Seoul. Big Happiness is a personal exploration of adoption, identity, and colorblindness growing up in a transracial family.
Members of Journey Together will be present for a short film discussion following the screenings.
This free event is sponsored by Journey Together, a peer group for adults who were adopted as infants or children or who were part of the foster system, and the Iowa Adoptee & Family Coalition.
